Since being launched on May 7, 2013, the VNREDSat-1 satellite has played a pivotal role in strengthening the collaboration between Vietnam and France in the arena of space technology. As Vietnam’s first Earth observation satellite, it was officially transferred to Vietnamese control in September of that year. Initially designed to last five years, VNREDSat-1 continues to function effectively into 2026, marking more than a decade of service. This satellite program has not only been about deploying a satellite but has significantly contributed to Vietnam’s strides in space technology, particularly with the training of Vietnamese engineers in system design and satellite management both in Vietnam and France between 2011 and 2013.
Through this initiative, Vietnamese engineers gained critical skills, eventually managing satellite operations and resolving technical issues independently. This transition from merely following established procedures to innovating their own solutions highlighted a major leap in Vietnam’s technical capabilities. Moreover, Vietnam established a comprehensive remote-sensing system that handles everything from imaging requests to data processing and distribution. By 2020, VNREDSat-1 had provided nearly 30,000 images for various applications including environmental management, disaster response, scientific research, socio-economic development, and national security.
Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, underscored the program’s role in building a technical and human-resource foundation for future satellite projects. Nevertheless, he pointed out that achieving greater technological independence would necessitate advancements in satellite design, payloads, electronics, software, and systems integration. This strategic direction was further solidified during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Vietnam in May 2025, which witnessed the signing of a declaration of intent between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies, aiming for long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation.
Future collaboration efforts are set to increase Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, software development, testing, and data applications. This includes enhancing capabilities in areas such as control software, image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and specific sensors and payloads. The overarching goal is to transition from merely acquiring satellite systems to co-developing them, thereby allowing Vietnamese scientists and engineers to gradually take on more comprehensive roles in satellite design, operation, and development, ultimately achieving a higher level of technological mastery and self-reliance in space technology.
