France and Germany Advocate for EU Trade Measures to Combat Unfair Market Practices

Amidst escalating global trade tensions, France and Germany are advocating for the European Union to adopt a new, rapid-response trade mechanism. This initiative is intended to enable the EU to swiftly counteract unfair market practices attributed to other countries. The call for action is rooted in a joint document from the two nations, which highlights concerns over persistent market distortions such as dumping, widespread subsidies, and currency convertibility restrictions that could jeopardize Europe’s industrial foundation and result in job losses.

The French-German proposal emphasizes the need to enhance and expedite the EU’s existing trade-defense measures, allowing for more comprehensive investigations that could encompass entire economic sectors. The proposal also suggests two additional instruments aimed at bolstering the EU’s economic security. One instrument would focus on reducing European companies’ reliance on single suppliers for critical goods, while the other proposes limiting access to the EU single market for countries that engage in practices undermining fair competition.

Under this proposed framework, the European Commission would gain the authority to activate countermeasures swiftly, potentially within days, unless a qualified majority of EU member states oppose such actions. This rapid-response capability is designed to address unfair trade practices more effectively, reflecting the increasing use of economic measures as strategic tools in global trade.

Any new legislative measures introduced under this proposal would require the approval of both EU governments and the European Parliament, ensuring that the process respects the union’s democratic principles while addressing urgent economic challenges.
