The new 62-mile Steel Cotton Rail Trail is putting the spotlight on one of the Peak District’s most underrated towns: New Mills. This “dramatic constellation of magnificent bridges and stone viaducts” is a standout highlight on the 14-section route.
As walkers on the trail, which links Manchester and Sheffield, approach New Mills, they are met with a spectacular landscape of vertiginous gorges and fast-flowing water. The town is a testament to industrial engineering built in harmony with a dramatic natural setting.
A key feature is the sweeping steel Millennium Walkway, which allows walkers to traverse the gorge and get stunning views. The town also boasts the oldest community-owned hydro scheme in the land, adding to its unique character.
After exploring New Mills and its “lovely llamas in a bosky paddock,” the trail continues along the canyon, passing Torr Vale Mill, the UK’s longest-running textile mill. The town offers “plenty of food and drink” for those pausing their journey.
This rail-linked trail makes it easy to discover the drama of New Mills. It’s a must-visit section for anyone interested in engineering, industrial history, or simply breathtaking and unique scenery.
