In a historic move, the London Marathon is set to expand into a two-day event in 2027, accommodating an unprecedented 100,000 runners over the weekend of April 24–25. This decision comes as a response to the overwhelming interest shown by the public, with more than 1.3 million hopeful participants entering the ballot. Although the expansion will allow many more runners to take part, the likelihood of securing a spot remains under 10% due to the high demand.
The expanded format is anticipated not only to increase participation but also to significantly boost fundraising efforts. Organizers predict the event will generate over £150 million for charity, marking it as the largest fundraising event in the history of UK sports. Additionally, the marathon is expected to bring about £400 million in social and economic benefits, underscoring its importance beyond the realm of athletics.
Scheduled events for the weekend are carefully organized to accommodate both elite and amateur athletes. The first day will feature races for elite women, elite female para-athletes, championship contenders, and “Good for Age” women, alongside a massive participation run that will see close to 50,000 runners hitting the streets. The second day will be headlined by the elite men’s race and will include another large-scale mass participation event, ensuring that both days offer significant engagement and excitement.
To manage the logistical challenges of hosting such a large number of participants, runners will only be allowed to compete on one of the two days. This approach is designed to maintain the safety and quality of the event. Results from the ballot are expected to be shared with applicants by early July, giving successful entrants ample time to prepare for the big race.
