Asserting that sovereignty is not for sale, the EU warns Trump’s tariff threat might cause a severe political crisis. Europe has been shaken by a stark ultimatum from President Donald Trump: sell Greenland or face punishing tariffs. Consequently, the EU has organized an emergency meeting of envoys to take place this Sunday.
The response from Brussels has been one of defiance and unity. Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa stated that tariffs would undermine the longstanding transatlantic partnership. They vowed that Europe would remain united and coordinated, standing firm in the defense of its member states’ sovereignty.
The economic threat is immediate and escalating. Trump declared that a 10% tariff would be imposed on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland beginning February 1. He added that the rate would climb to 25% on June 1 if a deal for Greenland is not reached.
The EU also sought to clarify the military situation in the Arctic, which has been a point of contention. Leaders described recent Danish exercises as standard procedures designed to strengthen security in the region. They insisted that these pre-coordinated drills are not a threat, but rather a contribution to shared Arctic stability.
Solidarity with Denmark is the driving force behind the EU’s emergency actions. Leaders confirmed that talks between the US and Denmark started last week but emphasized that coercion is unacceptable. The upcoming meeting at 4:00 GMT on Sunday will determine the bloc’s collective response to this unprecedented diplomatic challenge.
