King Charles reaffirmed the UK and Germany’s united stance against Russian aggression as he welcomed German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier for a state visit. Addressing guests at a banquet in Windsor Castle, the monarch said both nations “stand with Ukraine” and are committed to strengthening Europe’s security during a period of heightened geopolitical tension.
The visit highlights the growing significance of the Kensington treaty signed earlier this year, which deepens cooperation between the two countries on defence, migration, trade and education. Charles noted that despite a history marked by conflict, the UK and Germany had built a “renewed and honest friendship” grounded in shared values and a shared vision for Europe’s future.
Steinmeier echoed the king’s remarks, emphasizing joint efforts to reinforce stability in Europe and support Ukraine. He also said relations between the UK and Germany were now “in far better shape” than during the post-Brexit period, praising the treaty for helping rebuild trust and cooperation. His three-day visit includes talks with the prime minister and symbolic stops such as the ruins of Coventry Cathedral.
Throughout the visit, both leaders stressed the need for unity as Europe faces evolving security challenges. They highlighted close collaboration on defence and economic issues and pledged continued alignment in responding to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
